Moving Tips & Guides

family packing for move

Helpful resources from Coastal Moving & Storage to make your move smoother, safer, and stress‑free.

Spotting Fraud & Choosing a Proper Mover

Protecting your family’s belongings starts with choosing a mover you can trust. Unfortunately, the moving industry is often targeted by fraudulent 'brokers' and rogue operators who lure customers with low estimates only to hold their goods hostage for higher fees. Coastal Moving & Storage is committed to transparency and ethics. We believe an informed customer is a safe customer.

A legitimate mover will always provide a written estimate, carry proper state and federal licensing, and maintain a physical presence in the communities they serve. Before signing any contract, ensure you have received the 'Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move' booklet, which is required by federal law for all interstate moves.

Red Flags of Moving Fraud

  • Unseen Estimates: The mover gives an estimate over the phone or internet without ever seeing your goods or a detailed inventory.
  • Cash Only: The mover demands cash or a large deposit before the move takes place.
  • No License Info: The mover's website has no local address and no information about their registration or insurance.
  • Generic Identification: The mover answers the phone with a generic 'Moving Company' rather than a specific business name.
  • Rental Trucks: On moving day, a rental truck arrives rather than a company-owned and branded fleet vehicle.

Packing Techniques & Best Practices

Use Proper Packing Supplies

Invest in high-quality corrugated moving boxes, professional-grade packing tape, and clean newsprint or bubble wrap. Avoid using old grocery store boxes which lack the structural integrity for safe transport.

Strategic Labeling

Label every box on the top and side with the destination room and a brief summary of contents. Mark boxes containing fragile items clearly on all sides.

The Cushioning Method

Place a layer of crumpled paper at the bottom and top of every box. Wrap fragile items individually and fill all empty spaces with paper to prevent shifting during transit.

Dishware & Glassware

Always pack plates on their edges, never flat. Use cell dividers for stemware and glasses, wrapping each individual piece in paper before placing in the cell.

Weight Management

Pack heavy items like books in small boxes and lighter items like linens in larger ones. Aim for boxes that weigh no more than 30-50 pounds once full.

Electronic Equipment

Original boxes are always best for TVs and computers. If unavailable, use heavy-duty boxes and plenty of bubble wrap. Remember to photograph cable setups before disconnecting.

Prepping & Organizing for Your Move

30 Days Before

  • Notify Utility Companies: Set shut-off and start-up dates for power, water, gas, and internet.
  • Sort & De-clutter: Donate, sell, or discard items you won’t be taking. This reduces your weight and cost.
  • Collect Records: Gather school, medical, and dental records.
  • Change of Address: Update the USPS, your bank, insurance, and employer.

7 Days Before

  • Defrost Fridge/Freezer: Clean and dry thoroughly to prevent mold.
  • Donate Unopened Food Instead of Throwing It Away: We’re proud partners of Move For Hunger. If you have unopened, non‑perishable food, our crew can collect it on move day and deliver it to local food banks.
  • Confirm Travel Arrangements: Check flights, hotels, and vehicle shipping details.
  • Finish Packing: Ensure everything is boxed and labeled by room.
  • Set Aside Essentials: Fill a 'First Night' box with toiletries, basic tools, and bedding.

The Night Before

  • Pack Valuables Separately: Jewelry, passports, and pink slips should stay with you, not on the truck.
  • Rest Up: You’ll need energy for the big day ahead.
  • Final House Check: Do a final sweep through closets, drawers, and the attic.

Move Day

  • Be Present: Meet your Coastal Moving crew and answer any questions.
  • Review Inventory: Carefully check items off as they are loaded.
  • Final Walkthrough: Turn off lights, lock windows, and secure the home before leaving.
